Фредрік Лернерід провів останні півтора року, фотографуючи балетний клас в кібер, провінція Найробі. Тут знаходяться найбільші нетрі не тільки в Кенії, а й у всій Африці.

Фредрік Лернерід (Fredrik Lerneryd) - незалежний шведський фотожурналіст. Живе в Найробі, працює на міжнародні засоби масової інформації, неурядові організації та над особистими проектами. Ці знімки він зробив в рамках серійної «Балет в нетрях» (Slum Ballet).

A view over Kibera, the biggest slum in Africa,

Pamela is practicing Ballet outside her family`s house in Kibera.

It is around 30 children in the class, even though the space is small they manage to dance without bumping into each other

Mike Wamaya is a former proffessional dancer and teacher for the ballet class, The ballet is part of Annos Africa, a charity who also have art classes, traditional dance music and much more in slum areas around Kenya

Shamick, 13 is one of the older students, and he is part of the group that train in Kenya dance studio in Karen as well.

The school where the ballet is held is not well maintained, it`s an old concrete building, with some smashed glasses, and no doors to the classrooms

While the class takes place, other students, often boys gather all around the door and windows to get a peak of the beautiful dance in the cold concrete room

Halfway into the class, the train one by one, this is where the children can move freely and freely practice their skills and dance moves.

Викладач - Майк Вамейа (Mike Wamaya) - раніше працював танцюристом по всій Європі. Але ці балетні заняття спрямовані не тільки на фізичне, а й на психічне благополуччя учнів. Вони націлені на зміцнення в них впевненості, необхідної для вступу дітей у доросле життя.

«Я налагодив контакт з танцюристами, коли працював над іншою фотоісторією», - каже Лернерід. - І мене дуже зворушило те, що я побачив ».

Проект ще не закінчений, фотограф продовжує над ним працювати. У його зображеннях не тільки плавні рухи тіл і виразні особи. Він фокусується на тому, щоб показати рішучість людей, що практикують балет. Кілька фотографій дають уявлення про реалії неформальних поселень в провінції Найробі.

Місцеві класи перетворюються в балетну студію щотижня після шкільних занять. Учні та вчителі прибирають лавки і стільці, підмітають підлогу і перетворюють навчальний приміщення в простір для заняття мистецтвом. «Після свого першого візиту я зрозумів, що хочу повернутися і стежити за їх прогресом, дивитися як вони розвиваються», - сказав фотограф.

Wendy went to audition for Dance center Kenya this year, but she wasn`t picked, now she is aiming for next year.

Cooper Rust is the Artist director at Dance center Kenya, she says that even though the kids train in a small, old room and without shoes, there is really not much difference from the kids who train in her studio a few times a week, here she drilling Dickens, 13 in his dance

Some of the older students train one day a week in a upperclass ballet school in Karen, the routines here is the same as in Kibera, but the concrete floor and walls is replaced by wooden floors and a big bright room.

The ballet slippers are very precious for the group and they make sure they are well maintained and stored. Even though they only practiced barefoot, they use the shoes to advance their techniques

Pamela makes sure that her shoes and clothes are in perfect condition at all time.

The dancers doing homeworks in between to keep up their grades, they know that good grades and the dance is two things that can take them out of Kibera one day

George is playing the nutcracker, the contrast between dance lessons in Kibera and dancing on the national theatre of Kenya is unbelievable

George and Shamick is watching the show backstage during rehearsal for The Nutcracker on Nairobi National Theatre, comming from Kibera and dance at this stage is really extraordinary

Pamela and George both play a big part in the nutcracker at the national theatre.

Pamela is now dancing in a Ballet studio named dance centre kenya and she moved to a boarding school outside of Kibera slum, so her life has improved because of her talent as a dancer

Pamela is being interviewed about her life and travel form Kibera to the national theatre after the show is finished, but for her, this is just the start.
